What Type of Edging Does Your Rug Have?

When repairing or replacing existing edging or finishing a custom rug, we typically ask you two questions:

  1. Do you have binding tape or serging as the finished edges of your rug?
  2. Was it done by hand or machine?

The difference: the look, the quality, and the price.

Hand Binding

Hand binding is the most authentic way to finish the edging of a rug. Hand binding is done by sewing wool yarn by hand around the edging of a rug.

This is most appropriate for hand-knotted rugs.

Machine Binding Tape

Machine binding tape is a mesh-like fabric that is sewn directly on the rug or carpet to finish the edge using a heavy-duty sewing machine. Of the three edging options we offer, this is the quickest and easiest method.

This is good for a basic plush carpet, shaggy carpet where you won’t really see the binding, and machine made rugs.

Serging

Serging goes a step further by adding yarn around the edging using a machine. Machine serging gives rugs a handmade look without the cost.

This is good for designer carpet and machine made rugs depending on the style and look of the rug and room it is in.
